CDA FAQ’s:

What is the C.D.A.?

The CDA stands for "Child Development Associate", and is a credential awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, DC upon successful completion of all requirements.

What do I need to do to get my CDA?

The CDA process consists of several components:

  1. a resource file with 17 items common to childcare
  2. parent surveys
  3. observation by an Advisor
  4. 6 papers written on the competencies involved in providing quality child care, and an autobiography
  5. a 60 point multiple choice test on basic child development
  6. an "oral interview" in which you discuss pictures shown to you depicting common childcare situations

Do I need to take classes?

Some people do. You need to have 120 hours of in-service training hours in the past 5 years (or the equivalent of 2-3 college courses in child development) in order to complete your CDA.

Does a CDA expire?

Yes. CDA’s are valid for 3 years initially, then for 5 more every time they are renewed. (The renewal process involves much less than the initial expectations.)

What is the cost?

The cost for the CDA packet is $17.75. The cost for the credential (when you are ready to submit) is $325. Typically an Advisor is paid around $100.

How long does it take to get my CDA?

It is a "self study" program, but typically it takes 3 – 6 months.
