Tips for Smooth Transition Times
* Give children a warning (3-5 minutes) before the end of the activity
* Have materials setup beforehand
* Move children in smaller groups
* Avoid having children waiting lines
* Provide an activity while waiting( "I spy" or other simple game)
* Use songs to make transitions fun


Ways for Helping Children Cope with Loss or Trauma
* Carefully observe the behavior of the child to better understand child's feelings
* Reassure the child that the situation is not their fault
* Be a good listener and be receptive to a child expressing their feelings and concerns
* Provide opportunities for the child to explore their concerns through dramatic play, art and puppets
* Answer questions directly and simply


Ideas for Making Children Feel Welcome
* Personally greet each child
* Engage in one on conversation with the child
* Involve the child in classroom actitities and helper tasks
* Provide a special space for a child's belongings
* Use a child's name and/or picture in many ways, on cubbies, name tags, birthday posters and in songs
* Equip your classroom with furniture that is child sized
* Send the child a personalized welcome note before their first day of attendance



Questions to Ask When Planning an Activity
* Is the activity based on an interest you've seen or heard from the children?
* Is it suitable for children of that particular age?
* Is it suitable for the individual children in the group?
* Can it be expanded by the child?
* Is it fun?
* Does it actively engage the child to do, explore or create?
* Does it avoid causing boredom and/or frustration?


Good Questions to Ask a Child for Extending Play
* "Is there another way you could try it?"
* "How did you make that happen?"
* "What could you do with these things?"
* "Why do you think that didn't work?"
* "What would happen if...?"
* "How might another child help you?"
* "What will you do next?"
* "What else could you try?"
